Manual Lymphatic Drainage
The Lymphatic System has an important role to play in managing your health and well being. It is comprised of lymph vessels and 400-700 lymph nodes, which are largely located in the abdomen and around the neck. These nodes act to monitor and regulate the levels of lymph flow, produce cells and antibodies which protect our body from infections and disease. The Lymph nodes filter and purifie the lymphatic fluid circulating our bodies by removing the waste products such as excess toxins, bacteria, excess proteins, hormones and immunocompetent cells.
Lymphoedema
When the lymphatic system does not drain fluids from the tissue properly the tissues swell. In the short term this is known as Oedema, but if it is sustained over longer periods of time is it referred to as Lymphoedema. There are primary and secondary types of Lymphoedema, it can also be classified into different stages depending on its severity.
MLD treatments can help move the excess fluid through the body. Management of this condition is aided with with compression garments and exercise.
Lipedema
Lipedema is a condition where there is an abnormal build up of fat cells, generally located in the hips, buttocks and legs but can affect arms too. It can make the affected area feel heavy, painful and bruise more easily. The onset of Lipedema can be triggered by hormonal changes either at puberty, during pregnancy or menopause. Whilst there is no cure for this condition the use of MLD treatments along with compression garments, exercise and dietary changes can help in the management of it.
